A moment of historical ignorance:
In 1897, Dr. Edwin Goodwin got the Indiana House of Representatives to unanimously pass a bill which would have effectively pegged the
value of Pi at 3.2, 3.23 or 4.

Math 114: If you lost points for attendance reasons, there are 3 pre-final tests in Enable that you can take to
attempt to get some of those points back. They are located in Chapter 9.
They must be completed by the time of the final exam. Each test contains questions from all over the quarter. To make the
most of this opportunity, you should not take the tests until you are as prepared as you will/can be.

Math 51: Several of you are having difficulty with proving identities and simplifying expressions. From your work on
the last quiz, it seems that you are not following a disciplined/systematic approach, and end up trying random techniques in
a random order, and going round and round in circles.
Granted, intuition plays a part in being able to do this work quickly. However, by following a disciplined approach
repeatedly, you can learn to develop your own intuition. Just like with learning to play an instrument or a sport,
disciplined and repeated practice makes you better.

Math 51: Midterm 1 will have a no-calculator portion, and a calculator portion.
You will be given both portions at the beginning, and you will start with your calculator
on the floor under your seat. You should do as much of each portion as possible without
your calculator. Then when you decide you must have your calculator to continue, you will
submit the no-calculator portion, and then you can pick up your calculator and finish the
calculator portion. If you pick up your calculator before you submit the no-calculator
portion, that will be considered cheating, and subject to the terms outlined on the
greensheet.
