Class 19, Mon., Mar. 14 , 2011
We went over Laplace transformations, convolution integrals, and began to look at power series solutions of differential equations.
Read this free online set of notes about series solutions, and work problems 2,4, 11, and 13 at the end.

Class 18, Wed., Mar. 9, 2011
We went over sections 6.4 and 6.5. Note that I've added homework for section 5.3.
Please turn in chapter 5 homework on Monday.

Note: the math department is now planning to add a second Math 2B (linear algebra), a class many of you have asked about. The note I just received reads,

"Please announce to your students that we will open a new section of Math 2B for spring term. It should show up in the schedule by mid-to-late next week. We are not quite sure of the logistics yet, but, right now, we think
it will be M-F, 7:30 - 8:20 am, as that is the only time we can find a room."

Class 17, Mon., Mar. 7 , 2011
We went over sections 6.2 and 6.3.

Class 16, Wed., Mar. 2 , 2011
We went over sections 5.3 and 6.1.
On Monday we will have a short quiz on 3 of the problems that had mistakes in last week's exam. Please bring a scantron for this quiz.

Class 15, Mon., Feb. 28, 2011
Exam 2.

Class 14, Wed., Feb. 23, 2011
We went over sections 5.1 and 5.2, skipping section 4.5 for now.
Please bring a scantron on Monday for the exam, and bring chapter 3 homework also.

Here's a list of types of problems:

Converting Damped harmonic oscillator to 2 by 2 matrix form
Equilibrium points for 2nd order systems
Euler's method for 2nd order systems
Definition of eigenvalue and eigenvector
Types of solutions of 2nd order linear systems
Complex solutions
Solving parameterized systems
Meaning of eigenvectors and equilibrium points in 2nd order linear systems
Period, amplitude, beat frequency, resonance
Eigenvalues, eigenvectors and systems in matrix form
Eigenvalues, eigenvectors and the phase plane

Class 13, Wed., Feb. 16, 2011

Class 9, Wed., Feb. 2, 2011
We went over sections 3.3 and 3.4. Please complete homework through section 3.4.
Be able to find the straight line solutions to a system of two equations, using eigenvalues.
Turn in moldy bread report and also homework for chapter 2 by Monday.
We reviewed complex numbers (also see the appendix of the text).

Class 8, Mon., Jan. 31, 2011
We went over sections 2.5, 3.1, and 3.2.
Homework for Chapter 2 and Moldy Bread project are both due by Monday, Feb. 6 - you may turn both in Wednesday Feb. 2 or both on Monday, or one Wed. and one Monday!

Class 7, Wed., Jan. 26, 2011
We went over sections 2.3 and 2.4. Do homework thru 2.4.
The moldy bread experiment is due next Wednesday. If you don't have mold, you should have found a lab partner today who does!
We also looked at Sharkovskii's Theorem. We also examined the bifurcation diagram produced by varying the delta t size when applying Euler's method to the logistic equation.

Class 6, Mon., Jan. 24, 2011
We went over section 2.2 and had exam 1. Do homework through 2.2.

Here is the Devaney Java Differential Equations software. See if you can download and install it.

Class 5, Wed., Jan. 19, 2011
We went over section 1.9 and began 2.1. First exam is Monday, Jan. 24, on chapter 1. It is Scantron, and open book, open notes, calculator but not communication capable devices allowed. Turn in homework for chapter 1 on Monday also.
Check out these Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates. They often provide stipends and genuine research experiences in a variety of science fields. A number of De Anza students have done them in recent years and enjoyed them!

Class 4, Wed. Jan. 12, 2011
We had a first quiz, and went over sections 1.7 and 1.8.
Do Homework through 1.8.

Class 3, Mon., Jan. 10, 2011
We covered sections 1.5 and 1.6, do HW thru 1.6.
