  • Items marked (boxed, circled or underlined) in red are the correct answers or steps you needed to show to get credit.
    You do not automatically earn full credit for correct answers. You must also show correct work.
  • The number of points for each item is near the marked item.
  • Do your grading in red pen.
    Blue, black, pencil, highlighter etc. are not OK. 3 point service charge for using any of those.
  • Underline the parts of your work that match the marked work on the solution key,
    and next to them, write the number of points you earned on each part inside a circle.
    Do not use subtractive grading (ie. do not just subtract points from the maximum score for incorrect or missing work.)
  • If some step(s) of your work is (are) different from the key, but (you think) still correct,
    put an asterisk (*) next to that work, and come to office hours to defend your work and possibly get the credit.
  • Fill in the boxes on the scoring sheet for Course, Student ID and Test, and answer the Self Assessment question.

  • They underline the required parts of their solutions, and write the points next to them in circles.
    
    
  • In question 2, they don't explicitly show the use of the theorem about the limit of a function composition, nor the use of the limit laws, nor the negative angle identity for cosine.
    They believe they deserve partial credit because they know to find the one-sided limits of the inner function before applying the function composition, which they believe is equivalent to using the theorem,
    and for stating that cos -1 = cos 1, which is a direct application of the negative angle identity.
    They underline those items, and put asterisks (*) next to them.
    
    
  • In question 3, they don't show why x could not be e^-1.
    
    
  • In question 5, they don't state the interval over which it was relevant that f is not continuous.
    Also, they don't explicitly state which student is correct, as the question asked.
    They believe they deserve partial credit because they at least know it is relevant that f is not continuous.
    They underline that item, and put an asterisk (*) next to it.
    
    
  • In question 6a, they skip multiple uses of the limit laws, and use slightly different versions of the laws for some of their breakdown.
    They believe they deserve partial credit for some of the usage of alternate limit laws.
    They underline that step, and put an asterisk (*) next to it.
    Note that they just give themselves the credit for writing 2(1)² instead of 2*1*1 as shown in the grading key, because they use alternate limit laws.
    In general, using exponents versus repeated multiplication, fractions versus decimals versus negative exponents, factoring versus distributing, and commutative or associative rule issues
    which generate expressions which are obviously equal to the grading key should just be assigned the appropriate points.
    It is not necessary to spend time waiting in office hours for such trivial differences.
    
    In question 6b, they forget to put limit notation throughout one of the one-sided limits, although the algebraic expressions which should be inside their limits are correct.
    They believe they deserve partial credit for that algebra.
    Note that they will lose very few points for incorrect usage of notation on the first test in which it is introduced, but will lose progressively more points for the same issue on later tests.
    
    
  • They underline all the other parts of their work which exactly match the required parts on the grading key,
    and write the points next to each of them in a circle.
    
  • They will come to office hours to defend their work for additional partial credit for the parts they mark with asterisks.
    
  • They fill in the score on the scoring sheet for questions 3 and 4 which they do not need to defend, but not the four questions they will defend.
    They will fill in those scores after they talk to me in office hours, and then they will fill in the total.
    They also answer the self assessment question, which I will grade.

  Notice that in this sample,
  
  
  • They grade in red pen.

  • In question 2, they don't show the use of the law regarding the limit of a function composition (and why it applies), which results in them coming to the wrong conclusion.
    
    
  • In question 3, they don't show why the continuity laws apply to the situation, although they do justify their algebra.
    
    
  • In question 4, they miswrite what x approaches (which leads to the wrong final answer), they simplify the function differently from the grading key, and they don't show why the law regarding the limit of a function composition applies.
    
    They should defend their work on their simplification, since it is just a different by equally valid way of doing it.
    They should also defend their work on the incorrect x value, since they work through the rest of the problem consistently with that incorrect value, and it only reduces their workload by one step (the final value of the inverse sine). They would only lose 1/2 point for the wrong x value, and 1/2 for not being able to get a final value which doesn't involve inverse sine notation.
    
    If they defend their work, they would receive another 2 1/2 points.
    
    
  • In question 5, they don't check continuity (which leads to the wrong conclusion).
    
    
  • In question 6a, they don't use the allowed limits laws, although they know to find the limit of the correct function piece.
    
    In question 6b, they don't show how they rationalize the numerator, and they don't use the definition of jump discontinuity to justify why there is one. (A graph is not sufficient when the instructions require the lecture definition, which was algebraic, to be used.)
    
    
  • They underline all the other parts of their work which exactly match the required parts on the grading key,
    and write the points next to each of them in a circle.
    
  • They decide not to come to office hours to defend their work for additional partial credit.
    
  • They fill in the scores on the scoring sheet for all parts of all questions, and they fill in the total.
