  • Items marked (boxed, circled or underlined) in red are the correct answers or steps you needed to show to get credit.
    You do not automatically earn full credit for correct answers. You must also show correct work.
  • The number of points for each item is near the marked item.
  • Do your grading in red pen.
    Blue, black, pencil, highlighter etc. are not OK. 3 point service charge for using any of those.
  • Underline the parts of your work that match the marked work on the solution key,
    and next to them, write the number of points you earned on each part inside a circle.
    Do not use subtractive grading (ie. do not just subtract points from the maximum score for incorrect or missing work.)
  • If some step(s) of your work is (are) different from the key, but (you think) still correct,
    put an asterisk (*) next to that work, and come to office hours to defend your work and possibly get the credit.
  • Fill in the boxes on the scoring sheet for Course, Student ID and Test, and answer the Self Assessment question.
  • Write the number of points you earned for each question in the box on the scoring sheet under the question number.
  • Write your total score for the quiz in the box on the scoring sheet next to TOTAL.
    You must fill in the scoring sheet completely to earn any points.
  • If you have any questions about whether you should earn points for a different method, or for a single algebraic or arithmetic error,
    you must talk to me no later than Thu Apr 29 @ 2:35pm.
  • Your graded quizzes are due in Canvas by Fri Apr 30 @ 10:00am.
    If you do not resubmit the graded quiz and completed scoring sheet by that deadline, you will get 0 for the quiz.
  
  Here is a sample to show you what is required. This student will defend their work in office hours.

  Notice that in this sample,
  
  
  • They grade in red pen.
    
  • They underline the required parts of their solutions, and write the points next to them in circles.
    
    
  • In question 2a, they write the work using fractions instead of negative exponents as shown in the grading key.
    They believe they deserve partial credit because 2^-1 = 1/2, 2^-2 = 1/4 etc.
    They underline that work, and put an asterisk (*) next to it.
    They also subtract 1/2 point for not writing a sequence using the proper notation.
    
    They should just give themselves the credit for the trivial and obvious equivalence between 2^-1 versus 1/2 etc.
    In general, using fractions versus decimals versus negative exponents, factoring versus distributing, and commutative or associative rule issues
    which generate expressions which are obviously equal to the grading key should just be assigned the appropriate points.
    It is not necessary to spend time waiting in office hours for such trivial differences.
    
    In question 2b, they don't notice that the fifth term broke the pattern of the terms getting lesser and lesser.
    Also, they use the values of a₁ and a₂ instead of the symbols a₁ and a₂ as shown in the grading key.
    They believe they deserve partial credit because they make the equivalent comparison.
    They underline that comparison, and put an asterisk (*) next to it.
    
    Again, they should just give themselves the credit for such a trivial and obvious equivalence.
    It is not necessary to spend time waiting in office hours for such trivial differences.
    
    In question 2c, they again subtract 1/2 point for not writing a sequence using the proper notation.
    
    In question 2e, they write the L'Hopital's Rule work using n (integers) instead of x (real numbers).
    They also don't state that the summation is convergent.
    They believe they deserve partial credit for the correct L'Hopital's quotient of derivatives using the wrong variable.
    They underline that step, and put an asterisk (*) next to it.
    
    
  • In question 3a, they use incorrect (ie. shorthand) notation for limits throughout.
    They again use n where x is appropriate.
    They fail to justify their conclusion by naming the Divergence Test,
    and they don't state why that test justifies their conclusion.
    They believe they deserve partial credit for identifying a limit of infinity for an intermediate step.
    They underline that "value", and put an asterisk (*) next to it.
    
    In question 3b, the second part of their first comparison is false, which invalidates their subsequent "proof".
    Also, many required steps are missing, because the false comparison makes it seem like those steps aren't necessary.
    
    In question 3c, they don't prove that the terms were positive.
    In fact, the first term is negative (the rest are positive), and as a result, many required steps are missing,
    because not checking the signs makes it seem like those steps aren't necessary.
    Also, although they identify the value of p, they don't state why the p-series Test justifies their conclusion.
    And they use the Comparison Test to justify the wrong conclusion, because they don't notice the first term is negative.
    They believe they deserve partial credit for identifying the value of p, and for stating that the Comparison Test was involved.
    They underline those items, and put asterisks (*) next to them.
    
    
  • They underline all the other parts of their work which exactly match the required parts on the grading key,
    and write the points next to each of them in a circle.
    
  • They will come to office hours to defend their work for additional partial credit for the parts they marked with asterisks.
    
  • They fill in the score on the scoring sheet for questions 2c, 2d and 3b which they do not need to defend, but not the five questions they will defend.
    They will fill in those scores after they talk to me in office hours, and then they will fill in the total.
    They also answer the self assessment question, which I will grade.
  
  Here is another sample. This student will not defend their work in office hours.

  Notice that in this sample,
  
  
  • They grade in red pen.
    
  • They underline the required parts of their solutions, and write the points next to them in circles.
    
    
  • In question 2a, they didn't show how they got their correct numerical answers.
    
    In question 2d, they had the wrong numerator in their general formula.
    
    
  • In question 3a, they didn't show how they got some intermediate values.
    
    In question 3b, they didn't prove a certain denominator was positive.
    They also didn't check that the terms of their sequences were positive.
    
    In question 3c, they didn't prove a certain denominator was positive for certain values of n.
    
    
  • They decide not to come to office hours to defend their work for additional partial credit.
    
    If they had come to office hours, they would have received another 1 point on question 2d, and another 1 point on question 2e.
    Parts of their answer in question 2d were correct, and they used that incorrect answer consistently and correctly in question 2e.
    
    
  • They fill in the scores on the scoring sheet for all parts of all questions, and they fill in the total.
    They also answer the self assessment question, which I will grade.
