Course Information

1. Faculty are required to provide a syllabus to students during the first week of class.

a. Faculty are required to cover all of the material as listed in the corresponding Course Outline.

b. Course outlines can be found on the ECMS website.

c. Copies of old syllabi can be found on the PSME Division website.  

d. All syllabi must contain the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s)  that are are listed in the Course Outline. 


2. Meeting time with Students

a. Faculty are expected to attend all lectures and laboratory periods during the assigned classtime in a given quarter.

b. Facutly are expected to be present for the full duration of each meeting time with students.

c. Faculty can not expect students to meet outside of scheduled class time.


3. Cancelling a lecuture or lab period


4. Final Exams

a. Faculty are required to give a final exam for their course.

b. Without exception, the final exam must be held during the assigned time as published by the De Anza Final Exam Schedule.  Faculty are not allowed to change the final exam date or time.


Laboratory Information

1. Faculty Attendance Policy

a. The following policy regarding faculty attendance in lab is as follows:

It is the department policy that the instructor must be present in lab during scheduled lab time; however, circumstances may arise where the instructor must temporarily and briefly leave the lab, for instance, to obtain materials from the stockroom or use the restroom. In the event the instructor leaves the lab the instructor must announce to the class his/her location and his/her return. 

As stated above faculty and staff are expected to be present during the entire scheduled lab period.  Should an experiment finish early the instructor is still required to be physically present in the laboratory. 


2. Conducting or Modifying Labs

a. Instructors are expected to complete all labs published in the current department lab schedule.

    i. Exceptions are allowed for labs that must be cancelled due to faculty leave

b. Faculty are expected for follow the order of the published lab schedule labs as distributed by the stockroom.

c. Fulltime faculty can explore modifications, additions or deletions to exisiting experimental procedures with the goal of improving the outcomes of the experiment.

  i. 1 per quarter

  ii. Full-time faculty are expected to present their suggested changes to the department within two quarters

  iii. Part-time faculty are expected to follow current laboratory procedures in their entirety,

  iv. Part-time faculty are welcome to contribute ideas for improvement in collaboration with a full-time faculty    member. 

d. Piloting New labs

  i. Instructors may substitute labs with prior approval from the department in consultation with the stockroom personnel

  ii. Results of any substitutions should be presented to the department within 2 quarters.


2. Student Safety 

a. Faculty are required to give students a safety orientation and have all students sign the department safety document.  This document is to be kept by the instructor for two quarters.

b. Faculty are expected to enforce all of the safety requirements listed in the safety document and the instructor must also personally adhere to the guidelines listed in the document.
