Class 10, Mar. 9, 2011
The Dean of Physical Sciences at Foothill, Peter Murray, who oversees the grant for this class, told me yesterday that it is fine with him for students who want to repeat the class next quarter at De Anza to do so through Indpendent Study, Math 77. Peter said that the stipends will be made available for students who do the independent study also. This class can be run for one, two, or three hours credit, and what the students do is determined by contract between the student and instructor, so we would simply declare that the student must fulfill the same requirements as for PSME 41.

Also, I'd like to ask you each to give a 10-15 minute teaching demo using math material you've been working with in our class over the next couple of weeks. You can work with a partner if you like.

Are you keeping a journal of your work in this class? This IS a requirement for this course!

Class 9, Mar. 2, 2011
We discussed the classes and looked at a "casting out nines" or mod 9 trick.
Here's more explanation of how digit sums work.

Class 8, Feb. 23, 2011
We went over Kathryn and Tina's class problems, and will work more on them.
We also went over a way to model the least common multiple with a clapping game.

Class 7, Feb. 16, 2011
We looked at Tina and Kathryn's lessons for Battleship and artistic graphing.
I mentioned the RAFT (Resource Area for Teachers),
and also Keith Devlin's recent articles on whether multiplication is repeated addition.

I enjoyed the visits to the math classes Friday!

Class 6, Feb. 9, 2011
We went over graphing and coordinate ideas, and everyone will choose either "making pictures with coordinates" or "battleship" and develop a lesson plan utilizing the idea, present our work next class, and try to combine ideas.
We saw one of Vi Hart's Math Doodling videos, on stars. Take a look at some of the others she's made.
We also saw the "Asteroids" least common multiple idea, which is related to star polygons, as it turns out!
I will shortly get you a handout on "Asteroids math;" it relates to another activity involving "clapping your name," but should still make sense to you.
Please be prepared to turn in your journals/notebook/homework next class!

Class 5, Feb. 2, 2011
We went over many alternative arithmetic algorithms. Here is a site on Nines Complement subtraction. Here's info on the Gelosia mulitplication method and some other methods.

Class 4, Jan. 26, 2011
We worked on some toothpick puzzles and also some algebraic toothpick puzzles (this link does not have the problem we worked on) which the triangular numbers arose.
We also watched a video of Dan Meyer on Ted Talks. For next class, continue working on the handouts below, and find a problem being discussed in the math class you are attending and reconfigure it in the manner that Dan Meyer suggests, as a simpler and less well-defined, but more open to intuition, problem. We'll discuss next class.

Class 3, Jan. 19, 2011
We did another KenKen problem.
We also worked on the "Pile Problem."
We worked on the "Prediction Card Trick."
(See the handouts above.)

The fingerprinting needs to be done at the Foothill police dept. office, not at De Anza. They know about the PSME 41 fingerprinting and will not charge you for it. Hours for drop-in are 8 AM to 1 PM or 3 PM to 10 PM. I spoke with Samantha, who's there in the morning.

Shirikawa Middle School is at 665 Wool Creek Drive, San Jose, CA 95112, (408) 938-3200, contact teacher is Lisa Pitino

Class 2, Jan. 12, 2011
We spent the entire class filling out those forms for payment.
Please complete fingerprinting/TB tests if you need to.
More info soon on classes.

Class 1, Wed., Jan. 5, 2011
We played KenKen, and I gave out some extra problems.
Please get your TB test and fingerprinting ASAP.
Please begin keeping a journal for this class. We'll talk more about this Wednesday.

Here is a link to an interactive KenKen site, which generates new puzzles daily.
Here is the KenKen handout I gave you. Please work on it before next class.
Here is the other handout on Number Pairs; please try these also!

Here's the De Anza College Health Services site.
Here is their schedule for TB testing; please get it done this week:
