We went over the exam and worked on a quiz, which I will email you shortly. Finish chapter 5 homework and turn in on Monday. Also turn in the quiz on Monday.

Here are some handouts that might be helpful to you. Please read!
Augmented matrices.
Linear Algebra vocabulary.
Change of basis.

We went over section 5.3 and had exam III.

Class 14, Mon., May 24, 2010
We went over sections 5.1 and 5.2.
We also went over column and row space, null space and nullity, rank of a matrix, dimension, and basis.
Look up column space and row space in Wikipedia, these are good references.
Turn in homework for chapter 4 on Wednesday after exam 3.

Exam 3 (individual) will be Wednesday, May 26, not Monday, May 24. It will cover through section 5.1.

We went next two sections in the text, sections 4.4 and 5.0.
We will also go over new material not presented thoroughly in the text.
Here is a free online text that I will use as a reference for this material,
Linear Algebra, by Jim Hefferon.
This link is to an ftp site, so you should be able to download immediately.
Read chapter 1, section III on Reduced Echelon Form.
Especially read the sections on Vector Spaces and Linear Systems, section III.3.
The exercises in this text are linked to the solutions.

Another free online text is A First Course in Linear Algebra, by Robert Beezer
The section on Linear Combinations (it's called section LC, the page numbers differ depending on which version you download) has very complete examples of what we'll talk about in upcoming classes.

Class 12, Mon., May 17, 2010
Went over sections 4.0-4.3.

The additional problem: you have 3 glasses of sizes 8, 3, and 5 ounces, and the first is filled with 8 ounces of water. You may pour the water back and forth between the glasses, but cannot estimate amounts. How can you get exactly 4 ounces in one of the glasses?
The second more difficult problem: you have glasses of sizes 8, 7, and 6 ounces; can you pour exactly 5 ounces into one of the glasses?
We'll see and answer to these questions that uses a different coordinate system.

Class 1, Mon., Apr. 5, 2010
Went over material through section 2.0.
Check out grading policy on green sheet.
Here is Jim Hefferon's free online linear algebra text,
which is an excellent secondary reference.
Another free online text is A First Course in Linear Algebra, by Robert Beezer.
Schaum's Outline Linear Algebra is also very good.
There is a copy of the text on 1 hour reserve in the library, please make use of it.
