MATH IN THE REAL WORLD
welcome to spring quarter 2008
- sat jun 21 @ 3:50pm
Math 114: The bonus quizzes are up now, under Chapter 22. There are 7 of them, corresponding to the chapters that the questions are taken from.
Bonus Quiz Chapter 9 = 1 question
Bonus Quiz Chapter 7 = 2 question
Bonus Quiz Chapter 13 = 6 question
Bonus Quiz Chapter 3 = 1 question
Bonus Quiz Chapter 14 = 15 question
Bonus Quiz Chapter 19 = 4 question
Bonus Quiz Chapter 16 = 1 question
Several notes:
- Several chapters have no bonus quiz (mostly the recent chapters). The chapters without bonus quizzes will still be on the final exam.
- The questions tend to be of medium and hard levels of difficulty. I have chosen questions which students are most likely to have forgotten how to do, to help you plan your studying.
- Once you start a quiz, you must finish it completely. In particular, give yourself enough time for the chapter 14 quiz.
- The bonus quizzes will remain open until Tue Jun 24 @ 5:00am.
Also, section 22.1.3 homework has been deleted since we didn't cover it. This week's homework is due on Sunday night. All remaining late homework may be submitted for half credit by Mon Jun 23 @ 11:59pm.
I will be in the tutorial center most of Monday, when I am not in class.
Don't forget: If you haven't shown me your government (not DeAnza) issued ID by Monday, you will not be allowed to take the final exam, and you will receive an F.
Also, since the Enable survey in the entry below is a home quiz, if you don't take it, you will lose the 10 points associated with a home quiz. Send me e-mail when you've finished the survey below.
- fri jun 20 @ 11:10pm
Math 114: I'm having some difficulty saving the Enable quizzes right now, so I will go into the office on Saturday to try from there again.
In the meantime, there was one home quiz missing this quarter, so here's something to replace it. It's a survey regarding Enable, and if you complete it, it will count as 10 points towards your home quiz score.

Math 114: Some of you are going to be withdrawn next week because you have either been late or absent more than the allowed number of times. It seems that something in your life is interfering with your ability to attend class regularly, and it is probably also interfering with your chances of succeeding in this class.
However, I am offering you one last opportunity. If you have been late or absent more than 5 times as of Fri Apr 25, I will not withdraw if you satisfy the following 2 criteria.
- You make (and attend) an appointment with Melinda Hughes (the counselor who spoke to you on Thursday), and among other things, you discuss with her why you've been late/absent so many times and what you can do about it. You must complete your appointment by the end of the 5th week (Fri May 9).
- You are never late or absent again from Tue Apr 29 to Fri May 30.
If you do not satisfy both requirements, you will be withdrawn on Fri May 9.
You can contact Melinda Hughes at 408-864-8629.

Math 1B: Today in class, we asked "if F is differentiable, does its derivative have to be continuous ?". Our intuition was yes.
As it turns out, this is a case of intuition breaking down in the face of mathematical rigor, because the real answer is no. You can find a discussion of this question with links to examples at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080212204834AAh8jMK. Math 1B: Here are the solution keys to use for grading Group Quiz 1.
You will pick up your ungraded quizzes on Thu Apr 17.
Do your grading using a contrasting color (so I can tell your original work from your grading).
Circle the parts of your work that correspond to the points on the solution key, and the number of points each part was worth.
Write the number of points you earned for each question under the [X POINTS] label for that question.
Write your total score (out of 10 points) next to the words "Group Quiz 1" on the upper left corner of the front side of the quiz.
Your graded quizzes are due in class on Mon Apr 21. No late quizzes will be accepted.
You may also submit your graded quiz early.

If you did a problem a different way than I did, and you feel you deserve credit for your work, feel free to talk to me. You should be able to explain why your method is equally valid. If you truly understand what you did, this should not be difficult.
NOTE: The 2 point rational expression near the end does not need to be factored, but it must be simplified.

Math 1B: Raymond Co has offered to be a group tutor for our class. He will be dropping by on Thu Apr 17 to see who's interested in signing up. At that time, he will pass around a sign up sheet, where you give him your contact information, and the times that you would be available for group tutoring.

Math 1B: Groups for group quizzes must have either 3 or 4 people. Groups of 2 people, or more than 4 people, are not allowed. Small groups do not allow for sufficient exchange of ideas, and large groups allow people to take too much credit for other people's work.

Math 1B: The solution keys for Quiz 1 will be posted this afternoon, after I have finished grading the multiple choice and bonus questions.
If your paper has an asterisk next to your code, it means that your answer for the multiple choice question was the correct answer FOR THE OTHER COLORED QUIZ which your neighbors were all completing.
If you feel that you just happened to get the answer corresponding to your neighbour's quizzes by genuine error, you should speak to me. Otherwise, consider this an advisory.
Also, some of you have moved and been reborn since earlier this week. We need to figure out what your codes are exactly.

Math 114: The CSI (College Student Inventory) that I mentioned today is MANDATORY.
EnableMath requires participation in the CSI student retention program.
Students will be dropped from the class for failure to participate in the CSI program.
Here's what the e-mail you should be expecting this weekend looks like.
Andrew LaManque's e-mail with your CSI ID and password
Remember to print out the e-mail you receive, and bring it with you on Tue Apr 15.

- setting the number of questions to achieve mastery in some sections
- setting some new homework due dates (3 assignments due this Sunday at 8:59PM our time)
If you haven't gotten yourself started on EnableMath, talk to me today, so we can get you moving as soon as possible.

Three quick announcements:
If you didn't turn in the greensheet quiz today, make sure you turn it in on Wed Apr 9.
If you were given an add code on Monday, register and add yourself by midnight Tue Apr 8 (tonight), or I will give your seat away. (There are people waiting to get in.)
When you sign in at the beginning of class, use the pen I provide with the clipboard. Otherwise, I will count you as late.

Math 1B Spring 2008 Syllabus
Review your derivatives and algebra (p. 236) and your elementary anti-derivatives (section 4.1).
Read section 4.2 for Tue Apr 8.
Look up the Professor's Rebuttal section of my entry on RateMyProfessors.com to find a 1 point bonus question.
For the particularly aggressive students, here's a handout which we will work on towards the end of the quarter. However, with the exception of questions [8][b], [d] and [e], you already have enough calculus to do the entire worksheet.
