  Math 1A: Here is a handout related to sections 3.9 (related rates), 4.5 (graphing) and 4.7 (optimization).
  
  Math 1A related rates, graphing and optimization handout
  
  These three sections involve procedures with multiple steps, and multiple equations within a single problem. Organization becomes very important to solving these problems, and the handout highlights a way to organize the work for each type of problem.
  
  In addition, related rates and optimization problems are almost all word problems. To prepare for those sections, you should try to do the exercises regarding what is a quantity, what is an amount and what is a unit.

  • In the third question, she wrote the location of the asymptotes of as pi+n*pi, not just n*pi. However, she knows that the formula gives the same location for the asymptotes.

  • In the fourth question, she again forgot to simplify the absolute value of the amplitude. She also forgot the negative for the phase shift, which resulted in her 5 x-coordinates, 5 dots and graph all being in the wrong places. However, she feels that these are all consistent with the missing negative.
    She put an asterisk (*) next to this, and will come to office hours to defend her work and try to get the credit.
    
  • She fills in the subtotal for the second question because she doesn't intend to defend her incorrect work on it.
    
  • She does not fill in the subtotal for the other questions because she intends to defend her work on them. She will fill in those after she has come to see me, and then she will fill in the total for the entire quiz.
